Earning Your CMP Certification

The CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) credential is recognized globally as the badge of excellence in the events industry. The qualifications for certification are based on professional experience, education and a rigorous exam.

According to recent industry research conducted by PCMA, meeting planners who hold the CMP earn (on average) more than $10,000 annually than their non-certified counterparts.

PMCA Heartland Chapter member Lester Cornelius recently earned his CMP certification.

Today, he shared the following about his CMP journey and offers tips for fellow Chapter members thinking about becoming certified:

Question: What is the best thing about having earned your CMP designation?

Lester: Finally having earned the designation, on the second try, was a wonderful feeling! It is great that I have the official designation to show the world what I have been doing for years.

Question: What was the most challenging thing about preparing to earn your CMP?

Lester: Remembering all the various equations, codes, etc. There are a lot of details not to be missed when studying!

Question: How do you believe having your CMP designation will benefit your career?

Lester: Having the CMP helps solidify my career in the events industry as well as lets others know that I have the background and skill set necessary to always do a successful job.

Question: What tips do you have for a fellow Chapter member interested in earning the CMP designation?

Lester: Ensure that you dedicate enough time for studying leading up to the exam and if possible, take an in-person study group or course.
