Heartland Helping Hands

By: Cheri Jones, CMP, The RoArk Group

The PCMA Heartland Chapter hosted the Second Annual Helping Hands Day of Community Service on June 21.  Anytime you ask people from the hospitality industry to help their community, it will be a success.

I spoke with Sarah Morrissey.  She and Lynn Gross organized this day of outreach.   “We are so thankful for all those that joined the PCMA Heartland Community Service team to get involved in our Second Annual Helping Hands event. We had 37 amazing volunteers which was almost double the volunteers from the previous year. Way to make the Heartland Chapter proud! We look forward to seeing how we can involve even more volunteers and make an impact on more lives in the coming year.”

Below is a brief description of each mission that Heartland Chapter touched.  Thank you to those that volunteered. Please be thinking how you can get involved next year.

City Union Mission (Kansas City) – They provide 135,000 beds to the homeless and 256,000 meals a year in their 300 rescue missions. This mission also offers services for youth, employment therapy and training and transitional living program. City Union is one of their largest rescues. Those that volunteered on June 21 assisted with a meal at their Family Center.

Harvesters (Kansas City) – They are a regional food bank serving northwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas. Harvesters provides food and household items to more than 620 not-for-profit agencies including food pantries, community kitchens, homeless shelters, children’s’ homes and others. Those that volunteered on June 21 assisted in their Clean Room – an environment free from dust and other contaminants.

Duo (St. Louis) – They are a national not-for-profit organization providing highly skilled service dogs to individuals with disabilities and uniquely trained therapy teams in the community, offering dignity hope and independence to those we serve. Those that volunteered on June 21 assisted with planting flowers, cleaning windows, making dog treats and of course playing with dogs.

Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma (Tulsa, OK) – They are the largest private hunter-relief organization in eastern Oklahoma and work with a network of Partner Programs to engage their communities to end hunger. Those that volunteered on June 21 worked in the warehouse packing food items.
