Member Spotlight: Meet Valerie Villa

Name: Valerie Villa
Meeting Coordinator, Flik Hospitality Conference Centers.

The first concert I went to was: Destiny’s Child (Pre-Beyonce)

My favorite holiday is: Dia de los Muertos (November 1st and 2nd). This is a very ancient Mexican tradition where families and loved ones throw a party for their ancestors. An event filled with a lot of music, dancing, food, and gifts.

What you would be surprised to know about me: Even with my full-time conference job, I also work VIP events for various artists on tour. It’s a great skill and pleasure to be able to work in corporate and behind the scenes for concerts.

My favorite food is: Tamales

My next dream trip is to: My next dream trip is backpacking across England, Scotland, and Ireland. Currently planning a surprise 18-day trip with my niece for her 18th birthday.

Recently read book I recommend reading is: I really enjoyed reading Ritu Bhasin’s, The Authenticity Principle: Resist Conformity, Embrace Differences, and Transform How You Live, Work, and Lead. Highly recommend it.

Nickname growing up was: Val-Pal.

Won’t eat: I won’t eat mushrooms or olives.

Movie or bowling? Movies! I’m a big movie buff.

Start every morning with: I start every morning with a positive or upbeat music playlist. Music is my coffee; and I take a 25-minute walk/jog with my two dogs before making breakfast.

Why I joined the PCMA Heartland Chapter: To continue my lifelong learning of our industry and for thenetwork opportunities.

What I like best about the Heartland Chapter: The great members within our Heartland Chapter! A few have become great mentors throughout the years. Very grateful.

Best business tip/idea I’ve learned so far this year: Creating Stress-free break zones: Example: Partner with a local dog shelter to bring in some dogs or puppies for a couple of hours and
provide some snacks for employees/volunteers. This helps reduce tension, stress, and improves focus for those extra-long workdays such as concerts or conferences. The animal shelter crew run a tight ship, so things have gone smoothly in past.

What I like best about my job: What I like best about my job is the in-person introduction with the client, and clientele you’ve been emailing with months prior to the event day. It’s truly a pleasure to see everything come together.
